Invest in Washington Now Statement on Governor’s Action on Operating Budget
In response to Governor Ferguson’s action today on the state’s operating budget, Invest in Washington Now Executive Director Treasure Mackley issued the following statement:
“We’re glad to see that the Governor heeded the call of more than 100 organizations advocating for health care, education, reproductive justice, early learning and more to reject any further cuts. Because of the work of thousands of Washingtonians who wrote and called their legislators, attended town halls, and rallied at the capitol, we were able to preserve critical services that affect the lives of children, seniors, and working families across our state. Too often lost in these discussions is that every dollar spent on services like education, child care, housing, and health care, has an impact on peoples’ lives. These are not just numbers on a spreadsheet.
Make no mistake, the fight to fix Washington’s broken tax code and make the wealthy few pay what they truly owe is not over, it’s just getting started. This legislative session was an historic one for progressive revenue with more bills considered than any in history. In addition, Washington became the first state in the nation for a legislative chamber to pass a wealth tax.
It took years to pass the capital gains tax on extraordinary profits before it was finally signed into law and defended on the ballot with 64% of the vote. Washingtonians want to see the wealthy few and wealthy corporations pay what they truly owe in taxes. Our movement is more energized than ever to make that happen.”
About Invest in Washington Now:
Invest In Washington Now formed in 2020 to advocate for progressive revenue solutions and to ensure the mega-wealthy pay what they owe in taxes. We led efforts to pass the state’s capital gains tax on extraordinary profits and defended it at the ballot last year by defeating Initiative 2109 with over 64% of the vote.
