More than 100 Organizations Across Washington State Call on Governor Ferguson to Sign Legislature’s Final Budget
Advocates for working people, reproductive freedom, environmental justice, child care, affordable housing, education, health care, and more all agree that we cannot afford more cuts.
In a letter sent to Governor Ferguson’s staff on May 6th, more than 100 organizations across Washington State have called on the Governor to sign the legislature’s final budget and reject pressure from business groups to make additional cuts.
The 100 organizations represent a broad coalition of advocates across Washington state including labor unions SEIU 775, WFSE, and WEA; reproductive justice organizations including Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates and Pro-Choice WA; child care advocates including Brightspark Early Learning, Children’s Alliance, Child Care Aware of Washington; environmental organizations including Sierra Club; affordable housing advocates including Washington Low Income Housing Alliance, Housing Development Consortium, and Tech 4 Housing; education advocates including Washington’s Paramount Duty and League of Education Voters; and health care advocates including Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility, Community Health Plan of Washington, and Northwest Health Law Advocates.
The letter emphasizes the need to continue to protect essential services in light of the Trump Administration’s attacks on vital programs. Governor Ferguson has said repeatedly that being prepared for the Trump administration is a key consideration of his with regard to the budget.
“Given the Trump Administration’s actions in the first 100 days of office, it’s now more important than ever that Washington’s state budget protects the essential services that keep people safe, healthy, and housed.” – Excerpt from letter to Governor Ferguson

About Balance Our Tax Code:
Balance Our Tax Code is a coalition made up of more than 80 labor unions, non-profits, community-based organizations, housing and community associations, human service providers, immigrant rights advocates, and activists. Together, we work to educate, advocate, shape public opinion, and pass laws until we have a tax code that supports a way of life that works for all of us, not just the wealthy few.
About Invest in Washington Now:
Invest In Washington Now formed in 2020 to advocate for progressive revenue solutions and to ensure the mega-wealthy pay what they owe in taxes. We led efforts to pass the state’s capital gains tax on extraordinary profits and defended it at the ballot last year by defeating Initiative 2109 with over 64% of the vote.

Dear Governor Ferguson,
As a coalition of over 100 organizations across the state, we are writing to urge you to sign the Legislature’s final budget, retaining all revenue bills passed by the Legislature and avoiding any additional cuts to programs that Washington communities and families rely on every day. Given the Trump Administration’s actions in the first 100 days of office, it’s now more important than ever that Washington’s state budget protects the essential services that keep people safe, healthy, and housed.
While our state’s economy appears to be booming, working and low-income Washingtonians are the ones bearing the brunt of the compounding crises of unaffordable housing, price increases of everyday goods, underfunded schools, and inconsistent access to healthcare and child care. As we learned and are still experiencing from the Great Recession, every cut made to programs that support basic needs will have a devastating and lasting impact on families across the state.
We cannot cut our way to prosperity. The Legislature has already made difficult choices to balance competing needs. Further reductions will only undermine their work, and risk destabilizing the foundations of equity we’ve worked so hard to build.
We ask you to protect the future of Washington’s families by signing the Legislature’s final budget as passed—with its current sources of revenue and without additional cuts. The people of Washington are counting on you to prioritize a budget that reflects our shared values of care, dignity, and opportunity for all.
Sincerely,
